  • New at the GNDC Policy Summit: Ballot Briefs—A Unique Opportunity to Hear Both Sides

As the Greater North Dakota Chamber (GNDC) gears up for its annual Policy Summit on Tuesday, September 10, in Bismarck (virtual option available), we're excited to introduce a new feature to this premier public policy forum—Ballot Briefs. This mini-session offers attendees a unique opportunity to hear concise presentations from both proponents and opponents on key measures appearing on North Dakota’s upcoming general election ballot.

    WHAT ARE BALLOT BRIEFS?

Ballot Briefs are designed to provide a platform for both sides of a ballot measure to present their arguments in a straightforward, 7-minute format. Unlike a traditional debate, this session allows each side to make their case without interruption or rebuttal. This setup ensures that attendees receive clear and focused information, helping them to make more informed decisions when they cast their votes.

    WHY ATTEND?

    • Hear Diverse Perspectives: The GNDC Policy Summit prides itself on being a non-partisan event that brings together a wide range of viewpoints. The Ballot Briefs session exemplifies this by featuring speakers who advocate for and against various ballot measures. This year, topics include significant issues like constitutional changes and the legalization of recreational marijuana.

    • Understand the Implications: For example, you'll hear from North Dakota State Senator Janne Myrdal and retired lawyer Robert Harms on the proposed constitutional change (M2). This measure could fundamentally alter how future ballot initiatives are approved in the state. Similarly, the discussion on the recreational marijuana measure(M5) will feature insights from Steve Bakken (New Economic Frontier), who supports the initiative, and Molly Barnes (Northern Improvement), who opposes it.

    • Prepare to Vote: With the general election approaching on November 5, 2024, Ballot Briefs provide a timely opportunity to hear directly from experts and advocates about the potential impact of these measures. This information can be crucial in helping voters make informed decisions about the future of North Dakota.
